Melbourne Cup Calcutta Night Huge Success as a Social Event and Fundraiser

This was the 3rd time we have run a Calcutta and once again it was a huge success

Thank you to everyone who turned up at the Hope Island Tavern on the eve of the cup. As well as those that bought tickets prior to the event.

The Leukaemia Foundation was the charity that we supported this year . Every dollar raised from selling tickets for the Melbourne Cup horses and the auctioning amount we got for each horse. The Leukaemia Foundation got their cut first before we paid out prize money.

The Lions Club of Sanctuary Cove Hope Island paid out over $4,230 in prize money. 1st place Cash Prize in the Melbourne Cup was over $2,365.30.

The Calcutta Overview

– Calcutta Draw Tickets were $2 each, each was a chance to win and become the temporary owner of a horse in the Melbourne cup.

calcutta cash– Then all the horse are then auctioned and purchase by the Final owners for the Calcutta

– The temporary owner of the horses get 50% of the amount the horse was auctioned for.

– That amount that we have left (after the Charities cut) id the Cash Pool

Then we pay the following amounts after the running of the Cup (the next day) in CASH
– 1st Prize 65% of Cash pool
– 2nd Prize 20% of Cash Pool
– 3rd Place 10% of Cash Pool
– Last Place 5% of Cash Pool

The Leukaemia Foundation local representative Phillipa was the guest speaker at our Lions Club meeting on the 7th September 2017.The Leukaemia Foundation Cheque presentation Sept 2017

The meeting very well attended and was held at Arnie’s Restaurant in the Sanctuary Cove Country Club.

After the The Leukaemia Foundation presentation. The president of the Lions Club of Sanctuary Cove Hope Island handed over a cheque to help the The Leukaemia Foundation keep on doing the valuable work they do support people and their families that suffer from Blood Cancers.

The Lions Club is proud that as an organisation that 100% of all money raised for fundraising goes the the worthy recipients, like The Leukaemia Foundation

The Lions Club of Sanctuary Cove Hope Island on the 6th July 2017 saw the induction of 7 new members.

The New Member Inductions were done by Lion Narelle Parson who was the clubs Guiding Lion when the club was formed in 2010.

The club welcomed new members Mark, Siobhan, Natalie & Novie (far right).

As well as returning members Sara & Sylvia (5th & 6th from left).

We also had Lion Barbara (2nd from right) joining our club from Mt Isa Lions Club.

The club welcomes the new members and know that they will be a valuable part of our service club.

The Raewyn Andersen Memorial Charity Golf Day 2017 was a Huge SuccessCharity Golf Day & Dinner

The Inaugural Raewyn Andersen Charity Golf Day was held on the 28th Feb 2017 at The Palms Golf Course at Sanctuary Cove . It was a great day of golf, with hole in one prizes up for grabs of 3 electric golf carts and a Mercedes Benz. While no one managed the elusive hole in ones, there were lots of other nearest to the pin and longest drive competitions to vie for.

Players and guests enjoyed dinner in Arnies restaurant at the Golf and Country Club after the game. Our wonderful MC Mark Maccabe oversaw our raffles, charity auction and prize giving. A great night was had by all and many people walked away with some wonderful prizes.

The raffle was a success with tickets sold on the course by the gorgeous Gold Coast Meter Maids. Thank you to all the wonderful local businesses and individuals who donated our raffle prizes, including an amazing gift basket by Alpha H, accommodation vouchers, dinner vouchers, gift cards to local stores, wine and so much more.

The Charity Auction run by Helping Hand Group was also well received with many items going at a good price, and 100% of all profits going to charity. The charities supported this year were The Lions Medical Research Foundation & Camp Quality, helping Kids with Cancer.

How a Calcutta Works

Charity Fundraising Evening, Melbourne Cup Calcutta Monday 2nd Nov 2015

The Lions Club of Sanctuary Cove Hope Island will be running a Calcutta on Monday night 2nd November at Hope Island Tavern, Hope Island Road, Hope Island 6pm Registration, Draw starts at 6.30pm in the Sports Bar.

Fundraiser for Camp Quality Helping Kids with Cancer

Lots of fun, prizes & cash prizes to be paid out.

  1. The Calcutta is held on the Monday evening before the Melbourne Cup.
  2. Calcutta Raffle Tickets can be pre-sold so that people have the chance of drawing a horse and becoming a temporary owner. You do not have to attend the Calcutta to be a temporary owner, just purchase your tickets. Calcutta tickets can be purchased from a member of the Lions Club before or on the evening of the drawer commencing. Calcutta Raffle Tickets are just $2 each, 10% goes to the Charity Pool
  3. On the evening, all the Calcutta Raffle Tickets purchased are put in a barrel and the Melbourne Cup Horses in another barrel. If your name is drawn out you become the temporary owner of the horse that is drawn out of the other barrel at the same time.
  4. All horses are then up for auction.calcutta cash
  5. The temporary owner will get half of what is bid for the horse, the remainder going into a prize pool (which also includes the money from the Calcutta Raffle Tickets sold). So if you drew a horse and it was auctioned for $100, you receive $50 as temporary owner. Of course, you can bid for your own horse knowing that you are only paying half the price!!
  6. The prize pool grows as the horses are auctioned off.
  7. After the last horse is auctioned, the prize pool & this year’s charity donation is worked out.
  8. 10% of the Prize Pool plus 10% of the initial Calcutta Raffle Tickets will be donated to Camp Quality, helping kids with Cancer.
  9. The remaining 90% is split & paid out as cash prizes to the “Owner” of each of the horses as follows:  First Place, (65%) Second Place (20%), Third Place (10%) & Last Place (5%) at the Melbourne Cup Tuesday 3rd November 2015.
  10. Temporary owners (original purchasers of Calcutta Raffle Tickets who draw a horse) quickly realise that if they then bid in the auction for their own horse they are really only paying half the cost for the horse. Because 50% the horse auction price goes to the temporary owners. A great way to buy a horse in the Melbourne Cup!
