Formal Mens Clothing

Formal Cloths Wanted

Dear Lions and friend,

As most of you know, I work at Arcadia College, most of us met the students from the college that we sent on the Outward Bound Youth Development Course and I hope, like me, you were impressed with them.Formal Mens Clothing

We are coming to the end of the year and as they graduate or finish their year they have an end of year celebration. Sadly many of them have not got any semi formal clothes to wear, dresses for the girls and pants, shirts, ties, jackets or suits for the guys. They are between 16-18 but all shapes and sizes!

If anyone has anything suitable that they could donate or they know of families with teens who have outgrown their decent clothes they would be most appreciated and allow a young person to hold their head high when they graduate.

This is an urgent request, this week or next if you could spread the word, thank you so much, you do great work!

Best wishes Nick

Please contact Nick if you can help in anyway.

How a Calcutta Works

Charity Fundraising Evening, Melbourne Cup Calcutta Monday 2nd Nov 2015

The Lions Club of Sanctuary Cove Hope Island will be running a Calcutta on Monday night 2nd November at Hope Island Tavern, Hope Island Road, Hope Island 6pm Registration, Draw starts at 6.30pm in the Sports Bar.

Fundraiser for Camp Quality Helping Kids with Cancer

Lots of fun, prizes & cash prizes to be paid out.

  1. The Calcutta is held on the Monday evening before the Melbourne Cup.
  2. Calcutta Raffle Tickets can be pre-sold so that people have the chance of drawing a horse and becoming a temporary owner. You do not have to attend the Calcutta to be a temporary owner, just purchase your tickets. Calcutta tickets can be purchased from a member of the Lions Club before or on the evening of the drawer commencing. Calcutta Raffle Tickets are just $2 each, 10% goes to the Charity Pool
  3. On the evening, all the Calcutta Raffle Tickets purchased are put in a barrel and the Melbourne Cup Horses in another barrel. If your name is drawn out you become the temporary owner of the horse that is drawn out of the other barrel at the same time.
  4. All horses are then up for auction.calcutta cash
  5. The temporary owner will get half of what is bid for the horse, the remainder going into a prize pool (which also includes the money from the Calcutta Raffle Tickets sold). So if you drew a horse and it was auctioned for $100, you receive $50 as temporary owner. Of course, you can bid for your own horse knowing that you are only paying half the price!!
  6. The prize pool grows as the horses are auctioned off.
  7. After the last horse is auctioned, the prize pool & this year’s charity donation is worked out.
  8. 10% of the Prize Pool plus 10% of the initial Calcutta Raffle Tickets will be donated to Camp Quality, helping kids with Cancer.
  9. The remaining 90% is split & paid out as cash prizes to the “Owner” of each of the horses as follows:  First Place, (65%) Second Place (20%), Third Place (10%) & Last Place (5%) at the Melbourne Cup Tuesday 3rd November 2015.
  10. Temporary owners (original purchasers of Calcutta Raffle Tickets who draw a horse) quickly realise that if they then bid in the auction for their own horse they are really only paying half the cost for the horse. Because 50% the horse auction price goes to the temporary owners. A great way to buy a horse in the Melbourne Cup!

Good Luck –  Always a WIN for Kids with Cancer!

Lions Year 2014-15 Review

Thank you to our members, sponsors and members of the public that allowed us to continue the work we do which has allowed us to raise over $67,000 since 2010. Please support all our sponsors whose details you will find on the club website.

We doubled our membership in the past year – we can do it again, let’s all ask one!

During 2014/15 we changed the club name from Lions Club of Sanctuary Cove to the Lions Club of Sanctuary Cove Hope Island.

A special thank you to my fellow board members for their continued support during 2014 / 2015 – especially Secretary Lion Phil.

Lets remember our club member Brian Delaney who passed away during the year & is missed by all that knew him.

Service Hours – Performed by our Members during 2014/15 – 395 hours
Donations Made – by the Lions Club during 2014/15 – $10,929
100% Membership Attendance – was achieved by Lion Sylvia, Lion Phil & President Dave

During the year Lion Sally won the Clubs 2nd ever Members Card Draw which saw her receive a cheque for nearly $800

Our very successful trivia night earlier this year was due to the drive & determination of Michael, Sally & Kaz – Phil & Sylvia made the night additionally successful with the provision of venue, which is much appreciated.

Again this year our very own sausage sizzle Queen Sylvia was enjoying her therapeutic time cooking sausages while again raising funds for the Clubs causes.

Thanks to Michael for his commitment to the meat/seafood raffles at our local Tavern & all of our members that have assisted running these raffles.

Sally winning Card Draw May 2015

Members Card Draw Won By Sally

Congratulations Sally Winning the 2nd Only Card Draw

At the Social Meeting in May 2015 Sally drew the Joker for the Pack of Cards during the Members Card Draw. By winning the raffle Sally won $792 for her $5 investment. Sally winning Card Draw May 2015

So you ask,
Q/ “How does the Members Card Draw Work”

A/ At every Social and Dinner meeting held by the Lions Club of Sanctuary Cove Hope Island Members can buy raffle tickets in the Members Card Draw at $2 each or 3 for $5. During the meeting a raffle ticket is drawn and that winning Member selects a card from the pack of cards. If the member selects the Joker (only one in the pack) then they win the jack pot from previous Card Raffles.

However if they select any other card from the pack, that card is destroyed and the pack of cards has one less card for the next meetings card draw. The money collected from the raffle is divided 50/50, half into the Card Raffle winning pot and the other half goes into the clubs general account to help subsidise members fees and help with running costs of the club.

So the idea of the Card Raffle is to have a bit of fun, encourage 100% attendance and to subsidise membership costs.

The inaugural Members Card Draw went down to the very last card & that was won by Kaz in 2013 & the amount was over $2,000.

Thank You to Blue Jays for Sponsorship

Special thank you to Dong the owner Blue Jays Uniforms & Promotions, Biggera Waters has been very generous to The Lions Club of Sanctuary Cove.Blue Jays Uniforms & Promotions owner Dong

Pictured below is Dong with a Certificate of Appreciated from the Lions Club

Blue Jays Uniforms & Promotions has donated services to the Lions Club saving over $100 that we can now donate to a worthy charity.

Blue Jays offers services like, uniforms, embroidery, screen printing, and other promotional products like pens, stubby holders, diaries etc. Dong believes he is very competitive and was the only place the Lions Club could find would do a short run of screen printing as all others in the ares would not even consider a run of screen printing of less than 25 shirts even for a charity organisation. Thanks Dong.
